China's top advisory body on Monday held a seminar on the development of
the Beibu Gulf Economic Zone in southwest China to solicit opinion from
experts and southwestern provincial officials on a regional economic
cooperation plan.

"The development of the Beibu Gulf is conducive to the overall
development of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the stability of the
country's southern border area and the national unity," said Jia Qinglin,
chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political
Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

The Beibu Gulf Economic Zone covers six coastal cities along the Beibu
Gulf in Guangxi and borders Vietnam. It integrates the cities of Nanning,
the regional capital, Beihai, Qinzhou, Fangchenggang, Chongzuo and Yulin.

Its development helps promote the "westward strategy" to open up the
country's hinterland and the construction of free trade zone with
southeast Asian countries, Jia pointed out in a keynote speech at the
seminar.

To develop Beibu Gulf Economic Zone requires innovation and scientific
approach, and it will become a major footstone of the regional economy,
said the top advisor.
