In accordance with the general objectives for octopling the GDP under the
basis of 1980, achieving a relatively conformable life for the people in
the whole province and basically bringing about the modernization in
certain areas by the year of 2000, the overall framework of the economic
layout in our province by the year of 2000 is to concentrate our efforts
on the development of the areas along the Yangtze River and to formulate
a new and hi-tech industrial belt along the railway between Shanghai and
Nanjing.
Among these areas, economic zones concentrated with new and hi-tech
industries will be established mainly composed of steel, petrochemicals,
power, construction materials shipbuilding and other new and high
technological industries.
It is also planned to speed up the construction of the coastal economic
belt by exploiting its shoals, marine and biological resources, mainly
concentrating on the construction of ports, railways, highways and
waterways; to actively construct the economic belt from Xuzhou to
Lianyungang by concentrating on the development of heavy chemicals and
inshore industries and high-efficient and foreign-exchange-earning
agriculture; and to speed up the development of the economic axis of the
Great Canal in Northern Jiangsu with the exploitation of coal, petroleum,
iron ore, rock salt, gypsum and other mineral resources, readjusting the
industrial structure and actively expanding the foreign-exchange-earning
agriculture and building the bases of non-staple food of urban areas.
