China to tighten coal mine safety

Apr. 5 - China will take a series of measures to prevent increasing coal
mine accidents.
Director of the General Administration of Work Safety, Li Yizhong made
the remark on Tuesday at a press conference in Beijing.
He noted that over 1,100 people died of coal mine accidents in the first
quarter of this year, a 20 percent increase over the same period last
year.
In mid-February alone, five gas explosions occurred. The explosions are
being blamed on companies ignoring national laws and illegally
undertaking exploitation and production.
Li Yizhong said that China has asked coal mine operators to earmark money
for safety production and has started to set up a system of safety
guaranty money for mine workers.
