Act with prudence

Pollution treatment projects should be carried out with prudence to avoid
new damage, says an article in People's Daily. The following is an
excerpt:

Dianchi Lake in Kunming, capital city of Yunnan Province, is expected to
be cleaned up soon.

The provincial government announced a plan to channel water from the
Jinsha River into the lake to treat its pollution as well as to provide a
new source of drinking water for Kunming.

This project has been on the drawing board for more than four years and
it is estimated to cost 49 billion yuan ($6.45 billion).

The local government is showing it firmness to clean the heavily polluted
lake, which used to be the city's most beautiful attraction.

Warnings had been given about the lake's increasing pollution since the
1990s, but were ignored as sewage and industrial waste continued to be
dumped into it.

Now that the local authorities have decided to clean up the lake, people
are asking whether it would cause further damage to the environment.

Recovering the lake's biological balance could result in further
destruction to the environment if scientific research is not carried out
properly.

People are worried the rich, fertile banks of the Jinsha River could be
damaged as the expense of cleaning up the lake.

In Hokkaido, Japan, people planted only one type of tree on a deserted
hill in an attempt at reforestation. But the forest of only one type of
tree damaged the food chain of the animals and disrupted the biological
balance.

Officials in Yunnan have enough examples of what can go wrong and should
learn from the experience of others. And hopefully, the beauty of the
lake will be restored.
