Chinese language - Toll in Iraq bombings could surpass 150

WORLD / Middle East

Toll in Iraq bombings could surpass 150

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-08 19:44

A man cover the face of Iraqi intelligence officer Hecor Mohammed, after
he died in the hospital after he was attacked by gunmen in central
Kirkuk, Iraq, 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad, Friday, July
6, 2007. [AP]

BAGHDAD - A flurry of bombings in Baghdad killed 26 people Sunday, and
officials said the death toll from a giant suicide truck blast that
devastated the market of a Shiite town north of the capital a day earlier
could be more than 130.

Officials earlier had said Saturday's bombing in the town of Armili
killed 115 people, one of the deadliest attacks in Iraq in months. The
blast suggested Sunni insurgents are moving further north to strike in
less protected regions beyond the US security crackdown in Baghdad and on
the capital's northern doorstep.

The string of attacks Sunday morning in Baghdad made clear that
extremists can still unleash organized strikes in the capital despite a
relative lull in violence there in past weeks amid the US offensives.

Two car bombs detonated nearly simultaneously in Baghdad's mostly Shiite
Karrada district, killing eight people. The first hit at 10:30 a.m., near
a closed restaurant, destroying stalls and soft drink stands. Two
passers-by were killed and eight wounded, a police official said.

The area is near the offices of the Supreme Islamic Council in Iraq, the
biggest Shiite party in parliament, and is believed to be among the most
protected parts of the city.

About five minutes later, the second car exploded about a mile away,
hitting shops selling leather jackets and shoes. Six people were killed
and seven wounded, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity
because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

On Baghdad's southwestern outskirts, a bomb hit a truckload of newly
recruited Iraqi soldiers being brought into the capital to join the
crackdown, killing 15 soldiers and wounding 20, a police official at the
nearest police station said, also speaking on condition of anonymity
because he was not authorized to release the information.

Also, a bomb hidden under a car went off at the entrance of Shorja market
a central Baghdad market that has been hit repeatedly by insurgents
killing three civilians and wounding five, police said.

The US military announced that an American soldier was killed in combat a
day earlier in Salahuddin province. It did not provide details.

Armili residents on Sunday buried about 70 of the dead from the truck
bombing the previous morning. Mourners flowed into mosques and funeral
tents set up in the town's main street, where black banners were hung on
the walls with names of the dead.

Iraqi army and police forces were out in increased numbers in the streets
and closed off entrances to the town to prevent attacks on the funerals
a frequent target of Sunni insurgents, said Brig. Abbas Mohammed Amin,
chief of police in the nearby city of Tuz Khurmato.

The toll from the attack in the farming town of 26,000 mostly Shiites
from Iraq's ethnic Turkoman minority was still not clear. Abdullah
Jabara, deputy governor of Salahuddin province where the town is located,
said Saturday the toll from the blast was 115 dead nearly
three-quarters of them women, children and elderly.

On Sunday, Amin put the toll at 150 dead, while Abbas al-Bayati, a Shiite
Turkoman lawmaker, told reporters 130 had been killed.

The count was difficult because of the town's remote location and because
many of the dead initially had been buried under rubble that took hours
to clear. Saturday's blast ripped through the town market during crowded
morning shopping, destroying dozens of old mud-brick homes and shops.

Al-Bayati sharply criticized the security situation in the town, saying
its police force had only 30 members and that the Interior Ministry had
finally responded to requests for more two days before the attack. He
said authorities should help residents "arm themselves" to protect them
if the security forces cannot.

He said an Iraqi army battalion was moved out of the Armili region to
Baghdad earlier this year to help in the crackdown in the capital.
Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Mohammed al-Askari denied that,
saying the army's 4th Division was in the area.

Armili residents say regions like theirs are being left exposed and
vulnerable. Tensions are constantly high between the town's Shiite
Turkoman population and the Sunni Arabs who dominate the surrounding
villages. Iraqi security presence is scant in the remote region, far from
Salahuddin's administrative center and the eye of officials.

"The number of Iraqi police and army in this area is too low. This is a
farming area with a lot of empty areas, so it's neglected. There's not
even much presence of government officials," said Haytham Khalaf, 37, an
Amirli resident whose niece was injured. He accused local Sunnis of
helping al-Qaida set up a presence there.

US forces are waging an offensive in the city of Baqouba, just north of
Baghdad, to uproot al-Qaida militants and Sunni insurgents using the
region to launch attacks in the capital. But American commanders
acknowledged that many extremists fled Baqouba before the sweep began in
mid-June.

Al-Bayati said Sunni insurgents had fled to the Himrin region, a swathe
of mountains southeast of Armili, between it and Baqouba.

The top US commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, told The Associated
Press on Saturday he expected Sunni extremists to try to "pull off a
variety of sensational attacks and grab the headlines to create a
`mini-Tet.'"

He was referring to the 1968 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Tet offensive
that undermined public support for the Vietnam War in the United States.

The US military may be forced to tolerate attacks further north as they
focus on pacifying Baghdad and its surroundings, hoping that calm in the
capital will give the government time to take key political steps.
Washington is pressing Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to pass measures to
encourage Sunni Arabs to turn away from support of the insurgency to back
the government.

Efforts to pass the measures, however, continue to be tied down in
political feuding between Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish parties in
al-Maliki's fragile coalition.

Chinese Mandarin - Racial discrimination tied to breast cancer risk

WORLD / Health

Racial discrimination tied to breast cancer risk

(Agencies)
Updated: 2007-07-06 01:42

Black women who feel they've been victims of racial discrimination are
more likely than their peers to develop breast cancer, a large study
suggests.

A doctor examines a breast x-ray in an undated photo. Tools used to
predict whether a woman's breast cancer is inherited do not account for
smaller families and may leave some women in the dark about their risk
for future cancers, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday. [Reuters]

The study, which followed 59,000 African-American women for six years,
found that those who reported more incidents of racial discrimination had
a higher risk of breast cancer.

The relationship was stronger among women younger than 50, researchers
found. This finding is particularly interesting, they note, in light of
the fact that, unlike the case with older women, breast cancer is more
common among young black women than young white women.

It's possible that racial discrimination plays some role, according to
the researchers, led by Dr. Teletia R. Taylor of Howard University in
Washington, D.C.

They report their findings in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Past studies have suggested that over time, perceived racial
discrimination can take a toll on a person's health. A possible
explanation is that unjust treatment serves as a source of chronic
stress, which itself has been linked to poorer physical health.

In the current study, women were asked how often they faced "everyday"
discrimination, like receiving poorer service than other people at
stores, or feeling that people are "afraid" of them or act superior to
them.

They were also asked whether they'd ever been treated unjustly on the
job, in trying to get housing, or by the police -- all considered
examples of "major" discrimination.

Overall, Taylor's team found, women who said they frequently ran up
against everyday types of discrimination had a higher risk of developing
breast cancer. The same pattern was seen with major discrimination; women
who reported on-the-job discrimination, for example, had a 32 percent
higher risk of breast cancer than women who reported no such prejudice.

Women who said they'd faced discrimination on the job, in housing and
from the police were 48 percent more likely to develop the disease than
those who reported no incidents of major discrimination.

More studies, according to Taylor's team, are needed to confirm these
findings, and to uncover the reasons for the connection between racism
and breast cancer.

Learn mandarin - Cuba hits newly released CIA documents

WORLD / America

Cuba hits newly released CIA documents

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-30 11:16

Cuba's Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque, left, talks to Cuba's acting
President Raul Castro, center, and Ricardo Alarcon, President of the
National Assembly, during a session of the National Assembly of Popular
Power in Havana, Friday June 29, 2007.[AP]

HAVANA - Cuba's parliament said Friday that a 47-year-old plot to
assassinate Fidel Castro still reflects U.S. policy toward the island.

The National Assembly unanimously approved a resolution condemning CIA
documents made public this week that described the agency's attempt in
1960 to use mobsters and poison pills to kill Castro.

"What the CIA recognizes is not old history. It is present-day reality
and the facts show it," the resolution said.

Acting President Raul Castro, seated next to the empty chair of his
recuperating older brother Fidel, presided as the legislature passed a
declaration that "the CIA documents reveal part of the efforts to kill
comrade Fidel Castro and bring death and pain to our people."

"The conduct of the Bush government clearly shows its intention to keep
employing the worst possible tactics against Cuba."

Revelations about the CIA plot were among hundreds of pages of CIA
internal reports, known as "the family jewels," released this week.

The documents show that in August 1960, the CIA recruited an ex-FBI agent
to approach mobster Johnny Roselli to take part in a plot against Castro,
who took power in January 1959.

The agency gave him six poison pills, which they tried unsuccessfully to
have other people put in Castro's food. The plot was scrapped after the
failed CIA-sponsored Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in April 1961, and U.S.
authorities retrieved the poison pills.

U.S. law has forbidden official assassination attempts since the
administration of Gerald Ford, and Washington denies it has attempted to
kill Castro since then.

Still, Havana officials say there have been more than 600 documented
attempts to kill Castro over the decades. Now 80, Cuba's "Maximum Leader"
has not been seen in public since handing power to a provisional
government headed by his younger brother while recovering from intestinal
surgery last July.

National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon said later Friday that, "God
willing, (Castro) will live to see the regime change in the United States
that has begun" evidently referring to the U.S. presidential
elections. "That country has to change because its people deserve
something better, something more decent."

Alarcon's comments played off an exchange of statements this week by
Castro and President Bush mentioning the "good Lord" in references to the
80-year-old leader's health.

In a statement published in official newspapers Friday, Castro quipped
that divine intervention may have spared him from U.S. attempts on his
life.

"Now I understand why I survived Bush's plans and those of presidents who
ordered my assassination," Castro wrote. "The good Lord protected me."

He was sarcastically referring to Bush's statement Thursday that "one day
the good Lord will take Fidel Castro away."

Chinese Mandarin - Echinacea 'halves risk of catching cold'

WORLD / Health

Echinacea 'halves risk of catching cold'

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-26 01:07

Echinacea, a medicinal herb that came to prominence thanks to its use by
Sioux Indians, can more than halve the risk of catching a cold, a
wide-scale study has confirmed.

Taking echinacea supplements can reduce the risk of a cold by 58 percent
and may also shorten the duration of a cold almost one and a half days,
according to the paper, published on Sunday in the July issue of the
journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

The study is a "meta-analysis" comparing the outcome of 14 published
trials using echinacea.

One of the trials combined with echinacea with vitamin C, which showed
the two together reduced the incidence of a cold by 86 percent.

The analysis was led by University of Connecticut pharmacist Craig
Coleman.

Echinacea is a term for nine related daisy-like plant species that are
native to North America and feature in the traditional medicine of the
Sioux and other Plains Indians as remedies for infection, snakebites and
rabies.

Other names for the plant are black sampson, Kansas snakeroot and purple
coneflower.

Coleman's team said they had counted more than 800 products containing
echinacea, which come in the form of tablets, extracts, fresh juice,
tincture and tea.

Three of the nine species are commonly used (Echinacea purpurea, E.
angustifolia and E. pallida), and different parts of the plant are used
for different products.

The authors say it is still unclear how echinacea appears to stimulate
the immune system against the cold virus.

Its three major ingredients are alkamides, chicoric acid and
polysaccharides, but it is unclear whether these work by acting
separately or together, or with the help of other constituents.

And the authors sound a word of caution, saying more work needs to be
done on the plant's safety before doctors can recommend echinacea as a
standard option for preventing or treating the common cold.

Tournament in Guangdong on Tuesday, June 19. [sports.sina.com.cn]

Italy beat China 87-79 in the second phase of the Four-nation Basketball
Invitational Tournament in Guangdong yesterday.

The Chinese team, mainly comprised of young players, already lost to
Italy 74-69 in their first round clash and Tuesday were unable to stem
the blue tide, adding to their losing streak against Italy since 2000.

China dominated for most of the match, going in front at the end of the
first three quarters: 24-17, 39-37 and 63-60, but Italy rallied in the
fourth and put China on the back foot, setting up their 87-79 triumph.

China's losing team were led by former NBA player Wang Zhizhi with 22
points. Wang Lei contributed 14 points with Wang Shipeng chipping in with
12 points.

According to China's head coach Jonas Kazlauskas, Yi Jianlian and Sun
Yue, absent in the US preparing for the NBA 2007 draft, will rejoin the
national team as well as Guangdong duo Du Feng and Zhu Fangyu after the
four-nation tour.

Earlier in the day, Australia edged out Croatia 82-79 for their fourth
win in a row in China.

SINGAPORE, June 13 - S-League striker Kim Grant has lodged a complaint
with soccer's world governing body FIFA and the Singapore FA after being
sacked by his club for swearing.

The former Charlton Athletic front man was shown the door by Geylang
United for indiscipline, local media reported.

"Grant breached the rules when he used the language at the office in
front of a few other players as well as other staff," Geylang general
manager Ong Yeok Phee told Singapore's Today tabloid.

"The vulgarity was targeted at the club... we felt it was unacceptable."

Englishman Grant said he had lost his temper following a spat over his
home leave entitlement.

"I admitted it was an error and I apologised for it," said the
34-year-old. "It is part of my culture and I did not say it to anyone's
face.

"I looked down and exclaimed angrily. I did not think it would hurt
anyone."

Learn Chinese - Russia ups the stakes in US missile shield row

WORLD / Europe

Russia ups the stakes in US missile shield row

(Agencies)
Updated: 2007-06-04 12:25

MOSCOW - Russia stepped up its Cold War rhetoric on Sunday with President
Vladimir Putin warning it would point missiles at European targets if the
US expands its nuclear defences near its borders.

Together with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Putin upped the stakes in a
war of words with Washington over US missile defence shield plans that
have caused a sharp downward spiral in relations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin presides a Cabinet meeting in the Moscow
Kremlin,in this Monday, March 26, 2007, file photo. Putin warned in an
interview published Sunday that U.S. plans to build a missile defense
system in Eastern Europe would force Moscow to find missile targets of
its own in Europe. [AP]

"If the US nuclear potential extends across the European territory, we
will get new targets in Europe," he said in an interview with newspapers
from the Group of Eight industrialised nations.

"It will then be up to our military experts to identify which targets
will be aimed by ballistic missiles and which ones will be aimed by
cruise missiles," he said.

Lavrov, meanwhile, shrugged off American insistence that its plan to
deploy missile defence hardware in Poland and the Czech Republic posed no
threat, casting it as an attempt to encircle Russia militarily.

The US plan "wonderfully fits the overall picture of American global
anti-missile defence, which according to our analysis -- just look at the
map -- is being deployed along Russia's perimeter, and also China's,
incidentally."

"If strategic components of the American arsenal appear in Europe near
our borders, we are obliged to ... cut off potential threats from that
deployment," Lavrov said in comments broadcast on the state-run
television channel Vesti-24.

After warning repeatedly that the US proposals would set off a new arms
race, Moscow tested a new multi-warhead missile last week that Putin said
was a direct response to US actions.

The interview with Putin was due to be published on Monday but
pre-released by Germany's Der Spiegel magazine. Putin and his peers are
meeting for a three-day G8 summit which begins in Germany on Wednesday.

"The anti-missile shield is part of a nuclear system that protects
American territory. For the first time in history, elements of it are
being moved to Europe," Putin said.

"We want to re-balance the defence instruments with more efficient
offensive equipment but we know that this could lead to a renewed arms
race for which we are, however, not responsible."

Tensions over the plan have contributed to sending relations between the
two states to levels many analysts say haven't been seen since the Cold
War.

But in spite of the sharp words, Lavrov pointed to a previous avenue of
Russian cooperation with the West on missile defence, saying: "It would
be better to resume work within the framework of the NATO-Russia Council
on creating theatre missile defence."

Developing a missile defence system to protect deployed troops from
missile attacks is one of several joint programmes by the NATO-Russia
Council, and is scheduled to be completed by 2010.

Washington says the central European shield, which foresees 10 missile
interceptors in Poland and radar in the Czech Republic, would protect
against potential threats from states such as Iran or North Korea.

"The Cold War is over. I don't view Russia as an enemy and I've got a
good relationship with Vladimir Putin and I intend to keep it that way,"
President George W. Bush told Bulgarian National Television (BNT) on
Friday.

But Putin, in the interview, rejected the claim that the missile defence
was about Iran.

"We are told that this defence system serves against Iranian missiles but
no Iranian missile has such a capability. It therefore becomes evident
that this concerns us, the Russians," Putin said.

Chinese Lesson - Gunmen kidnap oil workers in Nigeria

WORLD / Africa

Gunmen kidnap oil workers in Nigeria

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-25 22:40

LAGOS, Nigeria - Gunmen kidnapped a group of foreign oil workers on
Friday, including three Americans and four Britons, in Nigeria's unruly
southern petroleum-producing region, officials said.

An oil rig in a file photo. Oil rose to $71 a barrel on Friday, near a
nine-month high, as a strike in Nigeria threatened more of the country's
output and Iran remained defiant over its nuclear programme. [Reuters]

Security forces in the region earlier said only six people were
kidnapped, including an Indian, but details released by U.S. and British
embassy officials put the number at at least seven.

The embassy officials both spoke on condition of anonymity, citing
standard agency prohibitions againts their names appearing in public.

The latest abduction to hit Africa's oil giant took place in southern
Bayelsa state, said Joshua Benemesia, a leader of an unarmed,
government-funded group that helps provide security in the state. He said
six foreigners were taken, including an Indian. All were aboard a boat
owned by a Nigerian oil-services company, he said.

On Thursday, five gunmen grabbed a Polish worker heading to his
construction project in southern Nigeria and rushed the captive into the
lawless oil-rich region's swamps and creeks in a speedboat, officials
said.

Security forces were trying to make contact with the hostage takers, who
grabbed the man on his way to work in the southern city of Warri on
Thursday, said Brig. Gen. Lawrence Ngubane, a military commander in the
region.

The kidnappings are the latest in a run of more than 100 seizures of
foreign workers this year in the oil-producing Niger Delta, where all of
the crude is pumped in Africa's largest producer.

Some 200 foreign workers have been taken since militants stepped up their
attacks against the oil companies and government in late 2005, cutting
nearly one third of Nigeria's daily crude production capacity and sending
oil prices toward historic highs in oversees markets.

The militants say they're fighting for the liberation of two of their
leaders imprisoned on corruption and treason charges and more oil
revenues for their impoverished lands.

But in recent months, criminal gangs have taken up the practice of
kidnapping foreigners for ransom. Hostages are generally released
unharmed after a payment is made to the captors, although two died in the
crossfire when security forces intervened.

Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer and a top supplier of crude to
the United States.

Man United close to signing Hargreaves

(Ticker)
Updated: 2007-05-21 08:30

Manchester United appears to be closing in on a deal to sign Owen
Hargreaves after Bayern Munich admitted the English midfielder was
leaving them.

Hargreaves looks set to complete the move to the Premiership champions,
with the German media reporting he will sign a four-year contract.

Bayern has had a disappointing season, not only failing to defend its
Bundesliga title but also missing out on qualification for next season's
Champions League. The club's intentions to make sweeping squad changes
during the summer had already been expressed.

But senior director Karl-Heinz Rummenigge made it clear that 26-year-old
Hargreaves had been one of the players the Bavarian giants had hoped to
keep on board.

"A player like Owen Hargreaves would have looked good in our team next
year," Rumenigge told www-fcbayern.de "In the defensive midfield
position, Owen is one of the best in the world - it's a big sporting loss
for us."

Born in Calgary, Hargreaves has been tracked by United ever since
impressing for England at last year's World Cup.

Bayern kept a tight hold on its asset until Sunday when club president
Franz Beckenbauer confirmed the player was leaving.

"Owen Hargreaves will go," Beckenbauer told the DFB-Doppelpass programme
on German TV. "It's also the wish of the player. "Everything is right and
it is also financially right."

The midfielder represented hometown club Calgary Foothills FC from
1994-97 and had been contracted to Bayern until 2010. His breakthrough
year was 2001 when he starred on the Bayern team that won the Champions
League, the Intercontinental Cup and the Bundesliga.

Federer beaten by Nadal

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-05-08 15:30

Roger Federer once again came off second-best to arch-rival Rafael Nadal
when he was knocked out in the first round of the doubles at the Rome
Masters on Monday.

Federer and his fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka were edged out by Nadal
and former French Open champion Carlos Moya 6-4 7-6.

The defeat was Federer's third to Nadal in less than a month, having
already been beaten in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters and then
again in an exhibition match on a half-clay half-grass court in Mallorca.

Nadal and Federer had only met once previously in doubles -- at Indian
Wells in 2004, when Nadal and Tommy Robredo knocked out Federer and Yves
Allegro.

World number two Nadal denied his latest win would give him any advantage
over world number one Federer in the singles competition this week.

"We are in the second round of the doubles. That's it," he said.

Federer also played down the significance of the result.

"Other people always consider Nadal versus Federer to be a singles match,
but I don't," he said.

"I was doing this to help Stan, who has been coming back from injury.
We'd been talking about it for over a year, so I thought it would be a
good idea."
